Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her maternal grandparents and mother. As a child Ford was afflicted with anxiety due to an obsessional-compulsive condition. Ford was fascinated by acting during her teenage years she joined the National Youth Theatre. Ford gained entry to the Sylvia Young Theatre School, but after just a few days, decided that she wasn't a good for the school. Ford applied instead at the Central School of Speech and Drama and eventually secured an interview on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall played Pete Tyler on Doctor Who. Ford received her degree in 1993. But, before then, Ford made a television debut, appearing in Surgical Spirit in an episode from 1991. Ford took the professional title of Catherine Tate. Through the Nineties, Tate could be watched on television in programs such as The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning. She also worked regularly at the theater, ultimately joining the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. Tate was first noticed for her stand up comedy in the year 1996.
