Gabriel
Gabriel Salazar Vergara was born on January 31, 1936. Vergara is a scholar of Chilean history. In Chile, he's best known for his research about social history and understanding of the social movements. It is evident in recent student protests from 2006 and 2011. Salazar was born into a middle class family. He studied historical, sociology , and philosophy on the Universidad de Chile, and during his time, he served as working as an assistant for historian Mario Gongora and classical historian Hector Herrera Cajas. Salazar belonged to the Revolutionary Left Movement from 1971 until 1973. Salazar was also tortured by the army in Villa Grimaldi that same year. 2] After his release from the military prison in the year 1976, he was sent into exile within the United Kingdom. Then he received a grant for further study at University of Hull. He received a PhD on Economic and Social History from the university in the year 1984. In the following year, he returned Chile. Salazar was not well-known up until 1985 when he made his breakthrough. Salazar's research subjects included workers, peons and kids Huachos, as well as women. Salazar was among the founding members of Nueva Historia Social, a theoretical movement. Salazar views history as the tool for social action. Interview: Salazar said that he was a "leftist Critical socio historian", and did not accept the label "Marxist".
